SUMMARY:Filmscreening+Q&A "Syria: The Impossible Revolution"
DESCRIPTION:Syria – The Impossible Revolution(2018\, 90 Min.)Regie: Ronan
L Tynan und Anne Daly Esperanza ProductionVeranstaltung (Screening und an
schl.

anel discussion in the Moviemento Cinema. 09/28/2018 at 7 pmThe documentar
y\, first seen in Germany\, shows the development of the Syrian revolution
\, which began as a nonviolent uprising of broad sections of the populatio
n against one of the most ruthless dictatorships and resulted in a catastr
ophe. The Assad regime and its allies responded to the demands for bread\,
dignity and freedom with nothing but brutal force. The film follows the ev
olution from the beginning of Assad's reign until the fall of Aleppo in 20
16\, using archive footage and interviews with various people directly inv
olved in the uprising\, as well as the voices of experts. The role of vario
us supraregional and regional powers and the question of solidarity with t
he Syrian revolution and a population that was and is exposed to massive b
ombing\, starvation sieges\, displacement and the terror of various militi
as is also highlighted. The question of why an "anti-imperialist left" cou
ld not decide on solidarity with an uprising that is as legitimate as it i
s inspiring is critically examined.Afterwards\, the director and one or mo
re of the Syrian revolution participants will discuss with the audience th
ese and other issues raised by the film.(Film and Event: in English with\,

  – The Impossible RevolutionA film by Anne Daly and Ronan TynanDuration:
90 minsThree years in the making this feature length documentary offers u
nique insights into the roots of the Syrian Revolution and how what began
as a peaceful uprising turned into a very brutal conflict as the Assad reg
ime cracked down.‘Syria – The Impossible Revolution\,’ a film by Ann
e daly and Ronan Tynan\, seeks to unravel the roots and ‘complexities’
of the bloodiest conflict in theMiddle East as well as the politics of th
e Western response. It also examines why some elements on the Left are on
the same page as the extreme Right defending the Assad regime against “U
S imperialism” apparently oblivious to the role of Iran and especially R
ussia and her indiscriminate bombing of civilians as well as targeting hos
pitals which many charge are warcrimes? The film traces the roots of the S
yrian revolution through the regime of Assad’s father up to the fall of
Aleppo. Using extensive archive and interviews with a wide range of people
directly involved as well as experts on the region\, the documentary seek
s to offer some understanding about a conflict that has plumbed new depths
in terms of the toll it has extracted on civilians. Some suggest more tha
n five hundred thousand are already dead\, half the population have fled t
heir homes and five millions are now refugees in Europe and neighbouring c
ountries with little prospect of returning any time soon. The film also exa
mines the rise of the jihadis including Islamic State and Al Qaeda with ev
idence partly nurtured by Assad as he continues to present himself as “f
ighting the war on terror”. Meanwhile\, the violence has drawn in almost
every major power\, as well as all of the leading regional powers. But on
e thing is clear\, civilians and ordinary Syrians seem to count for little
or nothing in their calculations.Paul Conroy\, the legendary war photogra
pher\, described the documentary as ‘an incredible film on the history o
f the Syrian conflict’. Paul was wounded in Syria in 2012 when his colle
ague war correspondent Marie Colvin was killed in Baba-Amr\, Homs by an As
sad regime artillery barrage targeted at their press centre. French photog
rapher Remi Ohlick was also killed in the same attack.‘Syria – The Imp
ossible Revolution’ is an Esperanza Production and was directed by Ronan
L Tynan and co-produced with Anne Daly.___________________Esperanza Produ
